Newcastle United v Chelsea - part one

It is the Blues’ most northerly league trip of the season and an early start. Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton are still ready however…

TALKING POINTS

With the record of home invincibility against Spurs extend to the quarter-century, the league leaders trek up to Tyneside for the first football action of the weekend. Although Chelsea failed to hit the net during last weekend’s trip to the north-east, the result also brought a first away clean sheet in the league this season.
If Chelsea avoid defeat at St James’ Park we will break our club record 23-game unbeaten run in all competitions. This was originally set in 2007, equalled in 2009 and matched against Tottenham on Wednesday.
Key Stat
Chelsea have won 11 and only lost two of our 17 away Barclays Premier League games in 2014.
Yet this is not an entirely happy hunting ground for Jose Mourinho. His two wins at Newcastle have both come in the League Cup (one in 2006 pictured below) and victory on Saturday would be the first in the league after four previous visits.
St James’ Park and Villa Park are the only stadiums of any longevity at which Mourinho has never tasted victory in the Premier League, although it is important to point out that the 2005 and 2006 league visits to Newcastle (a draw and a defeat) both came after his side had already been crowed champions.
Newcastle v Chelsea League Cup 2006

Alan Pardew has enjoyed better luck there. He was unable to nick any points from Mourinho’s Blues while at West Ham and Charlton, but he has won the last two meetings at the Magpies’ ground.
Pardew’s side have not been beaten at home this season since Manchester City won 2-0 there in mid-August. The last three at St James’ Park have ended in 1-0 victories, with Leicester, Liverpool and QPR the victims.
The win over the Reds was quite uneventful as these 12.45 kick-offs can sometimes turn out. This is Chelsea’s second of the season at this start time. Liverpool were the victims in that too: a dominant 2-1 win in front of a dozy Anfield crowd.
The Toon are yet to score in the opening half-hour of any Premier League match this season and Chelsea have outscored Saturday’s hosts by 15 goals to three in opening 45s. The second halves are more equal at 18 goals to the Blues and 12 to the Magpies.
Chelsea are seeking to break our all-time record unbeaten league run at the start of a season by taking it to 15 games. The heroes of the great 14-game, nine-win sequence in 1925/26 were centre-forward Bob Turnbull (with 17 goals over that run) and inside-right Albert Thain (seven), along with eccentric goalie Ben Howard Baker. Thain’s absence from the line-up coincided with the first defeat on 21 November, at home to Swansea in foggy, freezing, slippy conditions.

Unbeaten League starts
14 in 1925/26 (old Second Division)
14 in 2014/15 so far
11 in 2005/06
10 in 1964/65
10 in 1966/67

Our new club record unbeaten run in all competitions from the start of a season currently stands at 21 games.
Only two teams in Premier League history have ever accrued more than our current 36 points after 14 games. Chelsea, with 37 in 2005/06, and Man City, 38 in 2011/12, both went on to win the title.
A Blues win would extend the lead at the top to nine points over the Citizens, for a few hours at least, before Everton take the field at the Etihad. The Toffees won four in a row there in the late 2000s, but City have won two of the last three.
Southampton, no win in three, host a Man United team that have won four on the spin. Arsenal have failed to win in their last four visits to the Potteries.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE

Martin Atkinson is the referee for his second Blues game of the season. He was the official in our 2-0 home win against Arsenal in October.

OTHERWISE ENGAGED

Nemanja Matic is suspended (one match) for reaching five yellow cards. Cesc Fabregas is one yellow card away from a domestic suspension. He would miss our game against Hull next week if he is booked at Newcastle.
